Empower Women Entrepreneurs in Kigali

Breaking Barriers, Building Futures

Across Kigali, countless women rely on street vending to support their families. Many are single mothers with no access to formal jobs or financial capital. Carrying baskets of fruits and vegetables on their heads, they navigate daily struggles to earn a living. Despite their determination, these women face constant challenges, including fines, harassment, and instability due to restrictive policies.

Action10, through its local partner RISE-RWANDA Ltd, is providing a sustainable solution—small loans with low interest to help these women transition from the streets into structured markets, ensuring stable incomes and brighter futures.

Creating Economic Stability Through Small Loans

Our initiative targets women selling fruits and vegetables in Kigali’s markets—former street vendors seeking financial independence. By offering small loans ranging from 50,000 Frw to 200,000 Frw, we enable these women to stabilize their businesses, increase their earnings, and support their families. The program is designed with a clear approach:

  • Provide small loans to women who already joined the constructed market around Kigali
  • Consultation with market leaders that identified established women groups (Ikimina) in need of financial support.
  • Loan management training provided to Ikimina groups to build financial literacy.
  • Loan disbursement with a 10% interest rate over one year.
  • Weekly repayments to encourage responsibility and business sustainability.

More Than Loans—A Path to Growth

We ensure these women understand that the loan is an investment, not a handout. Training covers budgeting, simple accounting, pricing strategies, and business growth planning. Monthly meetings provide continued guidance, helping them stay on track and refine their strategies. By addressing financial barriers and equipping women with essential skills, we empower them to break the cycle of poverty and become self-sufficient entrepreneurs.

About Rwanda

Rwanda has transformed remarkably since 1994, becoming a model for economic growth in East Africa. The country is known for its strong business environment, commitment to gender equality, and digital innovation. While significant progress has been made, particularly in urban areas like Kigali, many entrepreneurs still face challenges accessing capital and financial services, especially in rural regions. The government’s Vision 2050 continues to drive development through technology and entrepreneurship initiatives.
